What is a credit union, anyway?
By definition, a credit union is a cooperative financial institution, owned and operated by its members. Simply, that means that the members of a credit union are also its owners. A volunteer board of directors who are also members, oversee the credit union. So, the people who make the decisions are the people who actually use the services of the credit union. That keeps savings rates fair and loan rates affordable.
